Gangtok NSO Organises Activities to Mark 75 Years of NSS

The National Statistics Office (NSO), Field Operations Division (FOD), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Government of India is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the National Sample Survey (NSS) in 2025. As part of these celebrations, the National Statistics Office, FOD, Regional Office, Gangtok organized various activities during March 2025.
A plantation drive was held at the Government Junior High School, Burung, Gangtok district on March 28, 2025. The school staff and officials of RO Gangtok actively participated in the drive. Flowering and decorative plants were planted around the school compound during the drive.

The plantation drive was followed by an interactive session with students and local people about the importance of various surveys conducted by the NSO. The session was held in the premises of the school and the Panchayat of Burung-Sangkhola ward. Smt. Srutika Tamang and Shri B. R. Giri, the headmaster, attended the session as special guests.
Initiating the program, Shri D. R. Sharma, Assistant Director, NSO, RO Gangtok welcomed the participants. He provided a brief overview of the activities of the Ministry and the importance of surveys conducted by the NSO. Shri D. R. Sharma also highlighted the importance of various surveys conducted by the NSS and how they are used in formulating government policies. He urged the people and panchayat to extend cooperation to the NSS officials in conducting surveys in their area.

Smt. Tenzin Choden, Senior Statistical Officer, spoke about the large-scale surveys conducted by the NSO, including the Periodic Labour Force Survey, ASUSE, Socio-economic Survey, and the collection of prices from different markets for the preparation of the Price Index.
Shri Tubai Dutta spoke about the organizational structure of the Ministry, the roles and functions of different divisions, and the importance of data collection. Participants were also enlightened about different categories of posts available in the organization, mode of recruitment, and qualification required for recruitment in these posts, career progression, etc.

Shri B. R. Giri, the headmaster of the school, and Smt. Srutika Tamang, panchayat member, expressed their gratitude for organizing the program in their ward and assured cooperation with NSS officials during future data collection visits.
As part of the activities celebrating the 75th anniversary of the NSS, RO Gangtok organized a rally on March 24, 2025. Banners and placards displaying messages about awareness of NSS surveys, Swachata, and the dangers of drug and substance abuse were displayed during the rally. The rally started from the ropeway terminal at Namnam, Gangtok and ended at NSO, RO Tadong.
Further, on March 27, 2025, scheme pamphlets and brochures were distributed to people and shopkeepers in and around the inter-state taxi stand and Gangtok Municipal Corporation office, Deorali. Similar activities will also be organized in other parts of the state during April to October 2025 as part of the celebration.
