Sarpanch Shakuntala Ben Vasava: Leading Change Through Sustainable Water Management

GUJARAT

Shakuntala Ben Vasava serves as the Sarpanch of the Samarpada Group Gram Panchayat in Dediyapada taluka, Narmada district, Gujarat. She has played a key role in addressing critical issues, particularly ensuring access to clean drinking water, which was a persistent challenge for the village.

Previously, villagers relied on hand pumps and borewells, increasing costs and time consumption. Women struggled with household chores, farming, and sending children to school. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, she led efforts to install borewells, motors, water tanks, pipelines, and tap water connections in every household, ensuring reliable access to potable water.

With support from the Jal Jeevan Mission and WASMO (Water and Sanitation Management Organization), water infrastructure improvements were implemented. Training sessions were provided, and Field Test Kits (FTKs) were distributed to monitor water quality. Water Committees were also formed, and pump operators were appointed and trained to maintain the system.

To ensure the sustainability of these improvements, a nominal water charge per household has been introduced to cover operational and maintenance costs. Regular meetings of the Water Committees address concerns, and the Taluka Panchayat oversees system efficiency. These measures help maintain the uninterrupted supply of clean drinking water, benefiting the entire community.
