प्रविष्टि तिथि: 19 FEB 2025 9:19PM by PIB Raipur

As part of the ongoing academic collaboration under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) and the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Raipur, a one-day training program on Advanced Digital Image Processing was organized on 19th February 2025 at BMDC. The initiative aims to strengthen industry-academia ties and leverage advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance operational efficiencies in steel manufacturing. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Ramana Rao, Director, NIT Raipur and Mr. S. Mukhopadhyay, Executive Director (Projects), BSP. Around 30 participants from BSP’s shops and user departments actively engaged in the training.

Present on this occasion from Senior BSP management was Mr. Rajiv Pandey, CGM (Power Facility), Mr. Ravishankar, CGM (A&D), Mr. Krishna Kumar, CGM (Electrical), Mr. Samir Gupta, CGM (C&IT), Professors from NIT Raipur, including Dr. Sanyal and Dr. S. Ghosh.

The MOU establishes a framework for collaboration in multiple areas, including Technical Training & Workshops to up skill engineers and professionals, Research & Development (R&D) for innovative solutions in steelmaking, Internships & Industrial Exposure for students to gain hands-on experience, Skill Development & Capacity Building for industry professionals, Utilization of joint facilities and expertise to solve real-world industrial challenges.

The training program covered key topics, including Introduction to Digital Signal, Image, and Video Data, Preprocessing and Data Visualization in MATLAB/Python, Image Enhancement and Compression Techniques, Application of AI in Image Processing for Industrial Use.

Dr. Ramana Rao, Director of NIT Raipur, emphasized the importance of academia-industry collaboration in driving innovation and bridging the gap between theoretical research and industrial applications. He highlighted how AI and modern research methodologies can revolutionize steel manufacturing. Mr. S. Mukhopadhyay, ED (Projects), BSP, reaffirmed the significance of integrating AI into steel production, stressing its potential to enhance quality control, predictive maintenance, and automation. Mr. Ravishankar, CGM (A&D), discussed the scope of further collaboration in applying AI to solve metallurgical challenges and optimize steelmaking.

The collaboration aims to create a structured approach to knowledge sharing and technology transfer, ensuring that BSP engineers are equipped with the latest industry-relevant skills. As part of this initiative, joint research projects will also be explored to address specific challenges in steel manufacturing, such as reducing energy consumption, enhancing product quality, and optimizing raw material utilization.

The program was conducted by Prof. N. D. Londhe, Professor, Electrical Engineering (NIT Raipur) Ms. Vibha Bhandari, PhD Scholar (Electrical Engineering, NIT Raipur). The program was coordinated by Mr. Subhash Rathore GM (A&D, BSP), and Mr. Ajay Sachdeo, GM(C&IT). This training program marks the beginning of an enriched academic-industry partnership, fostering technological advancements and innovation in steel manufacturing. The growing collaboration between BSP and NIT Raipur is expected to play a transformative role in making steel production more efficient, sustainable, and technology-driven.
