Short-term training program on "Selected Aspects in Steel Design"

Posted On: 18 FEB 2025 8:09PM by PIB Chennai

A short-term training program on "Selected Aspects in Steel Design" is being jointly organised by CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre (CSIR-SERC) Chennai, a constituent laboratory of CSIR and the Institute for Steel Development and Growth (INSDAG) from February 17 to February 28, 2025. The aim of the training programme is to equip the participants with modern methodologies and principles in the field of structural steel advancements including concepts such as limit state design, composite construction, and earthquake-resistant design.

The training programme was inaugurated on February 17, 2025 by Mr. P. K. Mishra, Director General, INSDAG. In his inaugural address he introduced INSDAG as an institute established in 1996 by the Ministry of Steel and major steel producers of the country, which disseminate knowledge on steel-based structures. He also highlighted that steel design is not adequately covered in the academic curriculum of B.Tech and M.Tech degrees, and there is a shortage of faculty specializing in this field. Given the increasing use of steel in construction, there is a pressing need to equip professionals and students with comprehensive knowledge of steel design. To address this gap, INSDAG has been conducting various training programs aimed at empowering professionals and students.  He encouraged participants to provide feedback on the course content and lectures to help improve future programs.

Dr. N. Anandavalli, Director, CSIR-SERC, delivered the chief guest address, introducing CSIR-SERC as one of the 38 laboratories under CSIR and an ISO 9001-certified institute known for its expertise in structural engineering research, design, and construction methodologies. She emphasized that research on steel structures at CSIR-SERC began three decades ago, with scientists actively contributing to the formulation of steel standards in collaboration with BIS. She acknowledged the significant contributions of both CSIR-SERC and INSDAG to steel design in India. The training program's curriculum was meticulously designed by experts from both institutions, identifying key areas requiring greater focus.

This joint initiative provides an excellent opportunity for students and young professionals to gain an in-depth understanding of steel design, from fundamental principles to case studies on landmark steel projects, with insights from scientists, academicians, and industry professionals. Dr. N. Anandavalli encouraged participants to actively engage with experts, ask questions, and enhance their skills and knowledge. She wished the program a great success.

Dr. Anandavalli also congratulated the efforts of the course coordinators, Dr. P. Prabha, Principal Scientist, CSIR-SERC, and Mr. Manas Mohan Ghosh, INSDAG, for successfully organizing the training program. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. P. Prabha, CSIR-SERC.
