Karnataka’s startups make a mark in Startup India journey
Startup India initiative completes 9 years

Karnataka is among top three Indian states which have been a home to startups. Maharashtra leads with 27,459 startups, followed by Delhi (15,851) and Karnataka (16,335). Startup India, launched on 16th January 2016 to promote entrepreneurship and foster a vibrant startup ecosystem in India.
By 30th November 2024, a total of 1,54,719 startups were recognized under the initiative, covering all 36 States and Union Territories. Jar is one of those startups. Success stories of Jar and MakerInMe Technologies, headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka not only narrate the innovative thinking and hard work of their entrepreneurs but also underlines the favorable atmosphere that India has created for startups.
Jar: A Success Story from Bengaluru, Karnataka
Jar, headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka, is making waves in its industry. Since its establishment, the startup has achieved remarkable milestones, including enabling micro-savings through an intuitive app. The success of Jar reflects the broader achievements of India's startup ecosystem.
Taking the inspiration from a quote saying, “Save your money today and your money will save you tomorrow”, Jar has been helping people in making savings a habit. It is providing a platform, where people can start savings and ultimately grow their savings by accessing the financial products available on its app itself. As Jar continues to grow, it embodies the spirit of 'Make in India,' proving that innovation and resilience can lead to global recognition.
MakerInMe Technologies: An edtech startup from Karnataka
MakerInMe Technologies is an edtech startup from Bengaluru founded in 2016 by Parag Gulhane & Harish Rawlani. The startup provides complete STEM (Science + Technology + Engineering + Math) solution and makes the learning easy for students & teachers through its product.
MakerInMe has been DPIIT Startup India National Startup Award Winner 2022. It launched its first product named Cretile which addresses the challenges faced by institutions and students while supporting them on their STEM education. It offers 45+ LEGO-like plug-n-play and programmable modular building blocks for electronics, robotics, automation, IoT & AI. As part of the Startup India initiative, over 1.54 lakh startups have been recognized across all states and union territories. With 48% representation of women at the leadership level, these startups have created over 17 lakh direct jobs. Under initiatives like the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme and Fund of Funds, innovative companies like Jar have received crucial support to scale operations. This growth is supported by government initiatives like the BHASKAR platform and tax exemptions for recognized startups. Startup Bridges were also established with 21 countries to connect Indian startups to global markets.
Startup India – Major & Upcoming Initiatives
A. Startup Mahakumbh 2025
- Organized in March 2024, Startup Mahakumbh was one of India's largest startup events ever, solidifying India's stature as a global centre for innovation.
- Startup Mahakumbh 2024 featured over 48,000 attendees, 1,300 exhibitors, and global delegations from 14 countries.
- The upcoming edition of the Startup Mahakumbh is slated for first week of April 2025 with an aimed to be the largest exhibition of startups globally.
B. Manufacturing Incubators:
- DPIIT has proactively engaged with over 90 entities including large corporates, industry associations, veterans, and unicorns to emphasize the importance of supporting manufacturing start-ups in their early stages.
C. BHASKAR:
- Bharat Startup Knowledge Access Registry (BHASKAR) is a pioneering platform designed to catalyse innovation and drive collaboration across India's dynamic startup ecosystem. As a one-stop knowledge hub, BHASKAR empowers startups, investors, enablers, and policymakers by providing access to vital resources, tools, and connections necessary for growth and scalability.
- Around 5 lakh users have been registered on the platform.
D. District Outreach Program
- As per the vision of the Hon’ble PM ‘hindustan mei koi zila, koi … jaha startup na ho”. Ensuring entrepreneurship is far and widespread. The program aims to ensure the presence of at least one DPIIT-recognized startup in every district across the country.
- Significant outreach activities are being conducted in Indian districts where no DPIIT recognized startup was present, especially in the North-East Region.
- ~95% district coverage has been achieved till date.
E. Grand Challenge
- The start-ups will solve industry problems and work to create solutions that will help them “go to market” and receive “pilot orders.
