The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) hosted an enthralling Sitar recital by the renowned Sahana Banerjee on Jan 10, 2025 at the Jasubhai Memorial Auditorium of the Institute. Mrs Banerjee was accompanied by the dexterous Subhajyoti Guha on the tabla, and performed infront of a large gathering hailing from various educational institutes in and around Gandhinagar.

Music is perhaps the only form of art, which despite being technically inaccessible to many, is emotionally accessible to everyone. It forms a crucial part of all our lives. Most of us have a favourite song, a favourite singer, and a favourite album we keep returning to. While contemporary forms of music dominate the soundscapes of modern individuals, occasional glimpses of the ‘classical’ help us in navigating the cacophony of Instagram reels, and pushes us to think, meditate and reflect. Hosted by Art@IITGN, the recital transported the audience to a serene world, steeped in patience and tranquility.

As a distinguished artist from the Rampur Senia Gharana, Mrs Banerjee began her musical journey at the tender age of four. She was trained by her parents Chhabi Banerjee and Pandit Santhosh Banerjee, both prominent musicians. The dexterity in her performance acted as a testament to years of training, and her command over Dhrupad Ang Baaj and Khayal Gayaki left the audience spellbound. Subhahyoti Guha’s tabla added a refreshing flavour to the sitar. A recipient of the President’s Award, Mr. Guha began his training under his father, Dr. Smriti Ranjan Guha, from the age of five, and later studied under the guidance of Pandit Sankha Chatterjee. A seasoned performer, he is known for his work both as a soloist and an accompanist, performing regularly across India and internationally.

After a captivating recital, Mrs Banerjee hosted a Sitar workshop on Jan 11, 2025, which was enthusiastically received by the IITGN community, and witnessed participation in large numbers.
