FSSAI in collaboration with BMC Takes Steps to Make Street Food Safer and More Hygienic in Mumbai
FSSAI and BMC Partner to provide Food Safety Training to More Than 10,000 Street Food Vendors in Mumbai

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a long-term strategic partnership to enhance food safety practices among street food vendors in Mumbai. The MoU was signed by Shri G. Kamala Vardhana Rao CEO, FSSAI and Shri Bhushan Gagrani, Municipal Commissioner, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in presence of Ms. Pritee Chaudhary, Regional Director-West Region and other senior FSSAI and MCGM officials. The collaboration aims at promoting food safety, hygiene and cleanliness among Street food vendors of Mumbai.
The initiative aims to train more than 10,000 street food vendors in the city on essential food safety and hygiene practices. The training program will cover topics such as personal hygiene, food handling, storage, and safety measures to prevent contamination and ensure the quality of food served. FSSAI will provide technical support, including identifying trainers and developing training materials, while BMC will facilitate the training process by providing venues, mobilizing vendors, and managing logistics. The training program will cover crucial aspects of food safety and hygiene, such as personal hygiene, food handling, storage, and contamination prevention. By equipping street food vendors with these essential skills, the partnership aims to improve public health, boost consumer confidence, and elevate the overall food safety standards in Mumbai. A Joint Coordination Committee will be established to oversee the implementation of the MoU and monitor progress, ensuring the successful execution of the initiative.
By working together, FSSAI and BMC aim to create a safer and healthier food environment for the citizens of Mumbai. The collaboration marks a crucial stride in making street food not only flavourful but also safe and hygienic.
