Two persons arrested by Mumbai Customs in connection with smuggling of 2 kg gold

Gold weighing 2.073 Kg, provisionally valued at Rs. 1.48 Crore, were seized by Customs officers in two different cases at CSMI Airport in Mumbai, on December 18 and 19, 2024. Two persons were arrested by Mumbai Customs Zone III in the process.

In the first case which occurred on December 18, 2024, CISF Staff at CSMI Airport, Mumbai, handed over one private airport staff along with 03 oval shaped capsules and on black coloured socks used to keep these capsules. After thorough investigation by customs officers it was found that those oval shaped capsules contained 24 KT Gold Dust in Wax having net weight of 1.363 Kg provisionally valued at Rs. 96 Lakhs. On further interrogation, the private airport staff admitted that these goods were handed over to him by the transit passenger with intention to smuggle it out of Mumbai Airport. The Private Airport staff was arrested under the Customs Act of 1962.

In the second case that occured today (December 19, 2024), Customs officers intercepted a passenger arriving from Jeddah to Mumbai, on the basis of spot profiling. This led to recovery of 24 KT gold dust in wax having Gross weight 745.00 grams and net weight 710.00 grams, provisionally valued at Rs. 52 Lakh. The passenger had concealed this gold in his body cavity. This passenger was also arrested under the Customs Act, 1962.
