PIB & CBC Kolkata Organises Roadshow as Precursor to WAVES

Content Creation going to be a Major Revenue and Employment Generator states DG, Eastern Region, PIB & CBC

The Government of India is going to host the World Audio-Visual & entertainment Summit (WAVES) from February 5-9, 2025. But before that, to bolster the country’s media and entertainment industry and to extend its global influence, ‘Create in India Challenge-Season I’ initiative has been opened up aligning the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Design in India, Design for the World’.

As a part of such a noble initiative, Press Information Bureau (PIB), Kolkata along with Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) under the Union Ministry of Information & Broadcasting organised a promotional event/ road-show on the WAVES at Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) of the city today.

The Director General of PIB and CBC, Eastern Zone, Shri TVK Reddy; Director, CBC, Kolkata, Shri Partha Ghosh; Regional Officer, Central Board of Film Certification, Dr Sushrut Sharma; Head of Film Studies department and Chairperson of Community Radio, Jadavpur University, Shri Abhijit Roy; VFX and unreal trainer, Shri Subhra Saha; and veteran journalist Shri Ashoke Sengupta were present on the occasion.

Around 150 students and research scholars from across the M&E sector as well as faculty members from institutes like SRFTI, Jadavpur University and The Heritage Academy participated in the event, which was aimed at appreciating the opportunities presented by WAVES and promoting participation in the summit.

In his opening remarks, Shri Reddy spoke about the significant potential of the global and Indian M&E industry. He highlighted the Indian market’s huge potential for revenue and employment generation, and innovation. Shri Reddy also informed that India has set an ambitious objective of quadrupling the M&E market size over the next five years and said that content creation will be a major revenue and employment generator in the near future. He added that the M&E industry will play a key role in making India the third largest global economy. He urged participants to participate and compete in various ‘Create in India Challenges’ under WAVES.

Shri Roy said, WAVES has created a festive atmosphere for content creators across the country through its Create in India Challenges. Shri Roy appreciated the fact that WAVES has gone beyond the traditional media to include alternative media like community radio. He also appreciated various platforms for exchange of thoughts and opinions and visibility, like interactions, seminars and discussions, provided by WAVES. He informed that Jadavpur University’s community radio has participated in Create in India challenges and encouraged all young creators and institutions to participate in competitions under WAVES.

Both Shri Sengupta and Shri Saha appreciated the initiatives taken by the Ministry to give a new dimension to the imagination of the youngsters and more particularly while throwing a challenge towards the world entertainment scenario.

The programme included an overview of the dynamic M&E sector in India, highlighting technology transition and advancements as well as how WAVES would cater to multiple pillars of this industry. Participants were also shown videos detailing components of WAVES and Create in India Challenges. A presentation on Mission LIFE was also included in the programme.
