The Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan) [AYJNISHD(D)], under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) with a series of empowering events. The celebration highlighted the achievements of persons with disabilities.

This year’s theme, "Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future," took center stage as AYJNISHD(D) launched a ‘Sports Meet’ for children under six with disabilities. The event aimed to nurture talent and promote inclusion from an early age.

Ms. Jiya Rai, a 16-year-old para-swimmer with Autism Spectrum Disorder and the youngest and fastest swimmer to cross the English Channel, inaugurated the event. Director of the Society for the Empowerment of the Deaf-Blind (SEDB), Shri Zamir Dhale and MLA Shri Adv. Ashish Shelar, attended as guests to support the initiative.
In his speech, Shri Adv. Ashish Shelar emphasized the importance of recognizing and harnessing the potential of persons with disabilities, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.” He praised AYJNISHD(D) for its dedication to empowering the community and commended Shri Zamir Dhale for his pioneering work in skill development for the Deaf-Blind.
The celebrations also featured a lively ‘Inclusive Walkathon,’ which saw more than 150 participants, including persons with disabilities, staff, students, families, and community members. The walkathon, which began at AYJNISHD(D) and proceeded along Hill Road, Bandra West, raised awareness about accessibility and inclusion. Additionally, students performed a dynamic street play, ‘Nukkad Natak,’ at the Bandra West Police Station to highlight the importance of learning Indian Sign Language (ISL) for empowerment.
