Composite Regional Centre (CRC) for Skill Development, Rehabilitation & Empowerment of Persons with Disability, Sikkim, established in 2020 at Assam Lingzey, Pakyong District, under the aegis of National Institute of Locomotor Disabilities (NILD), Kolkata, and the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, celebrated International Day of Elderly Persons.

Centre-based Assessment-cum Distribution

To mark this occasion, CRC Sikkim distributed assistive devices to 63 elderly persons under the Rashtriya Vayask Yojna of PMDK (DIVYASA Kendra) in a series of programs organized throughout the month of October 2024. The distributions were conducted through centre-based walk-in assessments and outreach programs in various parts of the state, facilitated by ASHA workers and the health department.

Screening cum Assessment at Singtam District Hospital

On the way to fulfilling its objective of reaching the unreached, CRC Sikkim camped at Health and Wellness Centre, Salgari, Namchi District which is around 74kms from Gangtok and participated at medical camps organized by the Department of Health in places like District Hospital, Singtam.

Sensitization & Awareness of ASHA workers at Old STNM, Gangtok

Director CRC Sikkim along with other officials delivered presentations and demonstrations, sensitizing the ASHA workers on disability and schemes of DEPwD at their monthly meeting at Old STNM, Hospital, Gangtok with the support of National Urban Health Mission.

In a first of its kind endeavor, CRC Sikkim started National Board of Examination Rehabilitation (NBER), Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) regulated Diploma in Sign Language Interpreter (DISLI) Course with 7 Students at its centre in this month. The centre also provided special education services to students with disabilities during the month.

The other schemes that the centre has been implementing are Niramaya Health Insurance Scheme for Persons with Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Multiple Disabilities and Intellectual Disabilities and UDID.

A webinar on the topic “Cross Linguistic Teaching Method for Persons with Specific Learning Disabilities with the participants of “Purple Talks” NIEPMD, Chennai was organised with the support of Secretary School Education Govt. of Sikkim on October 3, 2024. Approximately 100 beneficiaries from 30 schools in Gangtok District, Sikkim, participated.

Celebrating Important Disability Days

Special disability days of the month like “World Cerebral Palsy Day”, “World White cane Day”, “World Occupational Therapy Day”, “World Dwarfism Day” and “World Stroke Day” were celebrated with great enthusiasm.

CRC Sikkim also participated in the state-level program on Rashtriya Ekta Diwas-2024, commemorating the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India, on October 31, 2024
