Central Silk Board marking achievement to lead globally
Focus on Enhancing Quality and Quantity of Silk

Central Silk Board established by an Act of Parliament in 1949. And, it is an Autonomous Body working under the directions of Ministry of Textiles. Spread across the country with its research institutes, farm units and labs all together 159. Shri P. Sivakumar, IFS is the present Member Secretary to the Central Silk Board.
The efforts of scientific community brought various technologies for increasing the quality and quantity of silk. Implementing various Central Sector Schemes like SILK SAMAGRA in coordination with State Sericulture Departments (DoSs). CSB is thriving to empower artisans, tribals, women and marginals. Central Silk Board completes its 75 years journey successfully serving the Nation. Overall, 9.5 million people are dependent on sericulture as their livelihood. CSB benefitting the seri-stakeholders in the country by providing trainings (SAMARTH), workshops, awareness programmes, financial aids and subsidies.
The International Sericultural Commission (ISC) is an UN registered inter-governmental organization engaged in the development of sericulture and silk industry in the world. The formulation of ISC initiated with the gathering of global scientists led by Sir Louis Pasteur in 1870. This gathering was later institutionalized as an inter-governmental organization for silk. ISC is head-quartered at Bengaluru since 2013, headed by the elected Secretary General, who is also the Member Secretary of the Central Silk Board. The country membership base of ISC has increased from 13-23 after coming to India. Further, ISC has around 50 associate members includes individuals, organizations, etc., from across the world. India is one of the founder member countries of ISC among 23 countries. The member countries of ISC are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brazil, Cuba, DPR Korea, Egypt, Ghana, Greece, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kenya, Madagascar, Nepal, Romania, Syria, Thailand, Tunisia, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Zimbabwe. India is heading the countries since 2013. Earlier, the elections held during 2012, 2015, 2018, 2021 and the present 2024. India retained the chair fostering its significant contributions and efforts for the growth of sericulture industry.
Shri P. Sivakumar, IFS, Member Secretary, Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles was elected as the Secretary General of International Sericulture Commission (ISC) for the tenure 2025-27. The election held during the 27th Conference of International Sericulture Commission at Bucharest, Romania during 10-12.10.2024. The ISC is the UN affiliated inter-governmental organization committed for the global development of silk industry. This a proud moment for India and silk industry. Among 23 countries, India marked the 5th consecutive win.
