NIFT Gandhinagar is set to organize a Hand Spinning Workshop on 10th October 2024, starting at 4:00 PM, as part of the ongoing Khadi Mahotsav 2024.
Prof. Dr. Sameer Sood, Director NIFT Gandhinagar said that “the event will celebrates the rich heritage of Khadi while promoting sustainable practices in textile production. In collaboration with the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), and in alignment with Khadi Paridhaan Divas, this workshop aims to engage NIFT students in the traditional art of hand spinning, highlighting its significance in the context of Khadi and its impact on rural livelihoods.”
Khadi, a hand-spun and handwoven cotton fabric, was a vital tool in Mahatma Gandhi’s vision for India's economic and political independence. Historically, it symbolizes India's freedom struggle and the unification of the nation, forming the foundation of the Swadeshi movement.
However, Khadi faces modern challenges, including a lack of interest among younger generations in working within the sector, despite its growing popularity as a fashion fabric. This workshop seeks to educate the younger generation about the historical and cultural importance of Khadi and hand spinning, particularly in relation to India's independence movement, and its continuing relevance today.
As informed by Prof. Dr. Sameer Sood, Director NIFT Gandhinagar, “Participants will have the opportunity to experience the traditional craft of hand spinning using a charkha (spinning wheel). The event will foster a sense of community, emphasize the importance of sustainable textile practices, and highlight the environmental benefits of hand-spun fabrics, creating a platform for knowledge and skill exchange”.
