India Emerging as a Leading Centre for AVGC Industry, with Tamil Nadu at the Forefront: Union Minister Dr L. Murugan

India is emerging as a leading centre for Animation, Visual effects, Gaming, Comics (AVGC) and extended reality sector. This was stated by the Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Dr. L. Murugan while delivering the keynote address at the VEGAS (Visual Effects-Gaming-Animation-Society) conference held in Chennai on September 28, 2024.
The Minister said that the post-production work for more than 100 Hollywood and foreign films have taken place in Chennai. He expressed hope that the number would increase further in the coming days. He further acknowledged the talented youth are working in this animation and gaming sector in India and assured that the industry is providing them with a variety of employment opportunities.
Recalling the Union Cabinet's recent approval to set up a center for Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics and Extended reality in Mumbai, the Minister said, the sector today plays a key role in the entire realm of multi-faceted media and entertainment industry including film production, OTT (over the top) platforms, gaming, advertising, healthcare, education and other social sectors.
The Minister said that the World Audio, Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) will be held at Bharat Mandap in Delhi and various curtain raiser events related to it will be organised across the country. The conference will bring together industry experts and policy makers from across the globe to discuss the future of content creation. That will bring an opportunity for B2B and Government to Government meeting of the sector. In particular, it will focus on India's role in the global media environment. Dr. L. Murugan added.
