The IIT Gandhinagar hosted a colloquium with Marengo CIMS Hospital on September 28, 2024, where both the institutions came together to explore the vast potential of ‘medicine with engineering’ in India. The event marked a unique confluence of academia and practice, foregrounding its importance in radically improving the healthcare system of the country. More than 20 doctors from the MCIMS group, across their Ahmedabad and Delhi-NCR hospitals participated in the event, converging perspectives from different domains of inquiry.

The ideation stems from such initiatives widely pursued by hospitals outside India, who actively collaborate or have a partnering academic institution. Dr Raajiv Singhal, Founding Member, Managing Director, CEO of Marengo Asia Hospitals, underlined the significance of such a partnership by noting its impact on MCIMS’s patient-centric approach. Furthermore, Dr Dhiren Shah, Director, Heart and Lung Transplant Center, MCIMS Hospital expressed his gratitude towards this initiative, stating: “The disciplines of Life Science(s) and Engineering have co-existed since time immemorial. Infact, several technologies that have made our lives easier, and more sustainable today, owe their inception to their fruitful intersection. Institutionalising this partnership will enable the proliferation of top-notch services in the domain of health and pharma.”

Relevant faculties from IITGN highlighted their research interests, initiating a dialogue with the many doctors representing the MCMIS group. While the former discussed their recent innovations, the latter emphasised upon their potential applications in addressing medical ailments. The conversation highlighted several gaps that this collaboration could cater to, by bridging academic research with practical healthcare services.

Prof Amit Prashant, Professor, Civil Engineering, and Dean, Research and Development, underscored IITGN’s attention towards action-oriented planning. Key members from the Marengo Asia Hospitals, including Dr Raajiv Singhal, Founding Member, Managing Director, CEO of Marengo Asia Hospitals, Lt Gen (Dr) A K Das, Group Medical Director and Member Founding Team, Marengo Asia Hospitals, and Dr Shah, met with Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IITGN, along with Prof Amit Prashant and Prof Soumyadip Sett, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering, IITGN, to outline future strategies.

The doctors were also provided a tour of the campus, facilities and research laboratories, that highlight the distinctive interdisciplinary nature of the Institute.
