A group of seven journalists from Gujarat recently visited Numaligarh Refinery, a subsidiary of Oil India Limited, to learn about the developments in the Oil and Gas sector in Assam. During their 7-day tour of Assam, organized by the Press Information Bureau, they discovered the refinery's core competencies in crude oil refining and petroleum product marketing.

Expansion Project
The journalists were briefed on the Rs. 28,000 crore expansion project, expected to be completed by December 2025. This will increase the refinery's capacity from 3 million tonnes to 9 million tonnes per annum. A 1,640 km cross-country pipeline will also be laid from Paradip Port in Odisha to transport imported crude.

Sustainable Energy Initiatives
Assam Bio Ethanol Pvt. Ltd. (ABEPL), under Numaligarh Refinery, is working on producing ethanol using locally abundant bamboo. Bamboo will be sourced from farmers, farmer producer organizations, and farming communities.

Safety Innovations
In a unique initiative, Numaligarh Refinery uses Artificial Intelligence to prevent accidents. Over 200 cameras monitor the plant, detecting safety standard violations, such as not wearing helmets or safety shoes, and prompt action is taken.

The journalists also toured the refinery's infrastructure and visited ongoing projects, gaining insight into Assam's industrial and technical advancements.
