12th Convocation of IISER celebrated

The 12th convocation of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram (IISER TVM) was held at its campus in Vithura, Thiruvananthapuram today. Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, and Chairperson of the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology & Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC) was the Chief Guest of the function. The convocation was presided over by Prof. Arvind Anant Natu, Chairperson, Board of Governors of IISER TVM. After a modern and immersive research-integrated education, a total of 190 BS-MS, 70 MSc, 16 MS (Research), 26 PhD and 24 integrated PhD students were awarded the degrees in the 12th Convocation. Prof. J. N. Moorthy, Director, IISER TVM presented the report on the developments and progress of the Institute. The Chief Guest, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, presented the medals of excellence and the Chairperson of the Board, Prof. Natu gave away the certificates of distinction to the meritorious students. 

In his report, Prof. J. N. Moorthy, Director highlighted the Institute’s efforts to impart high-quality holistic education integrated with research and talked about the implementation of the New Education Policy. The institute has formalized the introduction of multiple lateral exits into the  BS-MS and Integrated PhD programs, he said. Prof. Moorthy mentioned that the academic achievements of the Institute have attracted several national and international recognitions to the Institute. In particular, IISER TVM is amongst the top 10% of the institutions in the Global 2,000 list announced by the Centre for World University Rankings 2024 Edition. He went on to say that the recently launched School of Earth, Environmental, and Sustainability Sciences is envisaged to position IISER TVM well in the global research landscape for tackling the grand challenges in the domains of climate change, atmospheric pollution, renewable resources, and sustainability.


In his convocation address, the Chief Guest, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood highlighted the role of education, science, technology, and innovation as the four important pillars for the advancement of society. He urged the academic community to break the silos by bridging the gaps across the pillars. The motto of institutions should be to promote innovation in teaching and research, thereby catering to regional, national, and rural needs, he said. Prof. Sood enumerated the efforts of the Government to close the divide between basic sciences and applied sciences in the changing Indian science and technology landscape. He expressed his  utmost satisfaction about the way IISER TVM has shaped and heaped praise on the world-class infrastructure and the ambience of the institute. He was categorical in stating that the institute would be one of the leading institutions in the coming years. He encouraged the graduating students to think about the global science and technology problems and strive towards returning something back to the society.


Prof. Arvind Anant Natu, Chairperson, Board of Governors of IISER TVM, during his address, congratulated the graduating students on their academic achievements and wished them all success in their future endeavours. Prof. Natu advised the students to be lifelong learners to address the challenges and to grasp the opportunities of the ever-changing world, which require innovative thinking and adaptability. He stressed on the adoption of the ‘reverse classroom’ concept which will gradually change the role of the teacher from a knowledge giver to a facilitator of learning. 


Over the years, IISER TVM graduates have taken up faculty positions in institutes of national importance such as Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology, and foreign universities such as North Carolina State University, and University of Texas, El Paso. The graduates of the Institute have also occupied coveted positions in organizations such as Indian Civil Service and various industrial organizations.
