PIB Ahmedabad organizes ‘Vartalaap’ on three New Criminal Laws
The entire approach is changed from ‘penalizing’ to delivering ‘justice’: Dr Neerja Gotru,IPS

PIB Ahmedabad in collaboration with the Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar organized a ‘Vartalaap’ - a media workshop on new criminal laws which will be going to be implemented from 1st July,2024.
Dr. Neerja Gotru Rao, IPS, Additional DGP Gujarat Police, was present as a chief guest who explained in detail about three new criminal laws. Dr S Shantakumar, Director of GNLU Gandhinagar, Registrar of GNLU, PIB and CBC officials along with over 70 media persons from various media organizations participated in the Vartalaap.
Dr. S Shanthakumar, Director of GNLU Gandhinagar delivered a welcome address and talked about how the philosophy and approach in the criminal justice system has changed and pointed out that Justice is the key focus which is phenomenal.
Dr. Neerja Gotru, Addl DGP shared a presentation on New Criminal Laws in detail and highlighted the three laws are changed as follows: the Indian Penal Code changing into Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, the Code of Criminal Procedure to Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, the Evidence act to Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
Dr Gotru pointed towards major changes including more focus on rights of the victim especially for women and children, use of more technology in the judicial system, terrorism, organized crime, introducing community service as a punishment for petty crime etc.
Dr Gotru highlighted that Time limits have been put in place for all the investigative procedures and Terminologies have been redefined for example the term ‘child’ now defines anybody younger than 18 years of age etc. Dr Gotru shared details on witness protection too.
Dr Gotru also answered various questions regarding the new criminal laws from the media and over 70 Media persons actively participated in this Vartalaap.
