UNVEILING OF REPRESENTATIVE STRATIGRAPHIC COLUMN OF CUDDAPAH SUPERGROUP AT VAJRAKARUR CAMP, ANDHRA PRADESH

The Geological Survey of India, State Unit: Andhra Pradesh has established one representative Stratigraphic Column of the Cuddapah Supergroup in Vajrakarur Diamond Processing Camp, Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh. This was unveiled by Shri Ch Venkateswara Rao, ADG & HoD, GSI, Southern Region along with Shri S. N. Mahapatro, Deputy Director General, SU: Andhra Pradesh. The unveiling ceremony was held on 10th March 2024.

The Stratigraphic Column, meticulously crafted and curated, stands as a remarkable testament of the geological history and evolution of the Cuddapah Basin, which is the second-largest Proterozoic basin in India. Its unveiling of the representative Stratigraphic Column in Vajrakarur Camp reiterates the commitment of GSI, SU: Andhra Pradesh to make to make Vajrakarur Camp as a vital educational and research hub. Along with the exhibits of kimberlites and lamproites, this Stratigraphic Column of the Cuddapah Basin will offer valuable insights into the geological past of this segment of Earth's crust.

Dr. Apurba Banerjee, Rakesh Kumar Gupta, Tarun Koley, Directors, Ms Shreepada Bal and Ms Sumana Mandal, Geologists and P Hari Krishna, Asst Geologist, State Unit: Andhra Pradesh were present during the unveiling ceremony. Other attendees included the students of Zila Parishad High School and local people who had the privilege of witnessing the unveiling of this geological artefact, underscoring GSI's commitment to promoting geoscientific understanding and exploration.

The function commenced with welcoming of all the dignitaries to the event by Dr. Apurba Banerjee, Director followed by the unveiling of the Stratigraphic Column by Shri Ch Venkateswara Rao, ADG & HoD, GSI, SR. Shri S. N. Mahapatro, Dy. Director General, SU: Andhra Pradesh informed the gathering about the importance of the Cuddapah Supergroup in the geology of Andhra Pradesh. Shri Ch Venkateswara Rao, ADG & HoD, GSI, SR conveyed his appreciation to SU: Andhra Pradesh for the establishment of Stratigraphic Column in Vajrakarur. He explained the importance of Cuddapah stratigraphy to the students ppresent in the occasion. Ms Shreepeda Bal and Shri P Hari Krishna gave an account of the history of diamond exploration in Andhra Paradesh and history of Vajrakarur Camp. Shri Tarun Koley, Director, SU: Andhra Pradesh proposed vote of thanks to the Chief Guest, other dignitaries, representatives of the Press, and others present during the event. During the event plantation was also done by Shri Ch Venkateswara Rao, ADG & HoD, GSI, SR and Shri S. N. Mahapatro, Dy. Director General, SU: Andhra Pradesh in Vajrarur Camp.

The establishment of representative Stratigraphic Column of Cuddapah Supergroup at Vajrakarur Camp represents a significant milestone in GSI's mission to unravel the geological mysteries and contribute to the global geoscientific community. The ceremony served as a platform to celebrate the rich geological heritage of our nation and highlight GSI's ongoing efforts in advancing geological knowledge.
