The First Entomology Students’ Conclave 2024 marks ESI foundation day at University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, Bengaluru along with ICAR-National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources, Bengaluru, and ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi.

The Entomological Society of India (ESI), on its Foundation Day, February 22, 2024, hosted the inaugural Entomological Students Conclave (ESC) 2024 in partnership with the University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, Bengaluru, along with ICAR-National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources, Bengaluru, and ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. Held at GKVK, Bengaluru from February 21st to 23rd, the event aimed to foster entomological research among students nationwide. Dr. S. N. Sushil, Director of ICAR-NBAIR, Bengaluru, lauded ESI's initiative in conceptualizing the unique conclave, marking a milestone in entomological discourse within the country. The ESC 2024 selected 284 students to present their research through oral and poster presentations on various themes including Biodiversity and Taxonomy, Beneficial Insects, Integrated Pest Management, Insect Toxicology, Biological Control, Insect Physiology, Molecular Advances in Entomology, Climate Change, Industrial Entomology, and Host Plant Resistance. Additionally, 146 students participated in virtual poster presentations, expanding the scope of entomological discussions.
Esteemed agrochemical companies such as Dhanuka, UPL, and PI Industries were invited to familiarize students with industrial research in entomology.
Dr. S. N. Sushil highlighted ESI's longstanding commitment to the field since its establishment in 1938, underscoring its role as one of India's premier professional societies serving entomologists and related researchers. The society's publications, including the Indian Journal of Entomology, Bulletin of Entomology, Bionotes, and Indian Entomologist, have been instrumental in disseminating entomological knowledge for decades.
Acknowledging excellence in entomology, ESI bestowed lifetime achievement awards upon twelve legendary entomologists and recognized ten individuals as honorary fellows. Notable recipients included Dr. S. N. Puri, Dr. B. V. David, and Dr. Mohammad Hayat. Moreover, awards were presented to outstanding young and senior entomologists, with Dr. U. Amala and Dr. Poonam Jasrotia among the recipients.
ESI's commitment to nurturing talent was evidenced through the inauguration of the Best Teacher Award and the presentation of the Best PhD Thesis Awards, encouraging educators and budding researchers alike. Dr. Prabhuraj A received the inaugural Best Teacher Award, while Dr. Saranya M. and others were recognized for their exceptional doctoral research.
