Workshop on “Best practices in Fish Marketing System of Andhra Pradesh”

National Productivity Council (NPC), New Delhi (Under DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India) organized a National level Workshop on “Best practices in Fish Marketing System of Andhra Pradesh” at Dr. YVS Murthy Auditorium, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam on 27.02.2024. The Workshop was sponsored by Department of Fisheries, Govt. of India and was conducted in partnership with Dept. of Fisheries, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and Andhra University.

NPC is an End Implementing Agency (EIA) for PMMSY and providing research & advisory services to Department of Fisheries, Govt. of India. The workshop aimed to delve into the various facets of fish marketing, highlighting effective strategies, initiatives, and technologies that can enhance the growth and sustainability of the fisheries sector.

With distinguished dignitaries and experts in attendance, the event promised insightful discussions and collaborative efforts to drive positive change within the fishery sector. More than 350 participants covering Fish Farmers, Wholesalers, Retailers, Exporters, Fish Processors, Marketing Committee Members, Fish Entrepreneurs, Subject Matter Experts, Government Officials etc participated in the day-long workshop.

Fish Farmers from all districts of Andhra Pradesh nominated by State Fishery Department, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, participants from various fishery associations and Government officials from various fishery institutions/ organisations across Andhra Pradesh participated in this workshop.

The inaugural session commenced with a warm welcome extended by Dr. Hemant Rao, Regional Director of RD Hyderabad, setting the tone for the day's proceedings. Professor P.V.G.D. Prasad Reddy, Vice Chancellor of Andhra University, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, emphasizing the significance of the workshop in advancing the fisheries sector. The session also witnessed the esteemed presence of Prof. M. James Stephen, Registrar, Andhra University; Shri S P Singh, Director & GH (Agribusiness), NPC, who shed light on the workshop's theme and NPC's role; Dr. Jai Singh Meena, Office Incharge, Vishakhapatnam Unit, National Institute of Fisheries Post Harvest Technology and Training (NIFPHATT); Shri D. Bhami Reddy, HOO, Fishery Survey of India; Shri R. Prasad Naik, AD, MPEDA, Visakhapatnam; and Sh. V. Venkateswara Rao, JD, Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh.

The National and International Level Experts discussed various aspects of Fish Marketing Systems, Effective Fish Cold Chain Management, Details of Innovative Containers for storage and Handling of Fish, Use of Phase Change Material as cooling Medium, Matsya Vahini-Eco Friendly Fish Kiosk for Sale of Fish etc. Following the inaugural session, the workshop transitioned into a technical session, featuring presentations by following experts:

  1. Sh. G. Rathinaraj, Sr. Advisor, NPC, presented on "NPC Study on Best Practices in Fish Marketing System in Andhra Pradesh."
  2. Shri R. Prasad Naik, Assistant Director, MPEDA, Sub-Regional Division, Visakhapatnam, discussed about the "Best Practices/initiatives of MPEDA for Promotion & Growth of Fisheries Sector through Exports."
  3. Sh. S. Balaji, State Coordinator, NACSA, MPEDA, shared insights on "Best Practices/initiatives of NACSA for Promotion & Growth of Fisheries Sector through Exports."
  4. Sh. V. Venkateswara Rao, JD, Dept. of Fisheries, Govt. of AP & Sh. Ravishankar, Team Head, Fish Andhra Project Central Desk, Dept. of Fisheries, Govt. of AP, elaborated on "Promotions of Domestic Marketing & Flagship Fish Andhra Project of Government of Andhra Pradesh."
  5. Smt. Swapna Arun introduced "Matsya Vahini - An Eco-Friendly Movable Fish Kiosks for Promotion and Sale of Fish."
  6. Sh. Satish Gokhale, Sr. Advisor (Design), presented on "Effective Fish Cold-Chain Management, Innovative Containers, use of PCM & ICE in Preservation of Fish Quality."
  7. Sh. GVA Prasad, Jr. Fisheries Scientist, Fishery Survey of India, Department of Fisheries, Govt. of India, concluded the session by presenting the latest statistics related to Fisheries in India.

The workshop provided a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, explore innovative solutions, and forge partnerships for the sustainable development of the fisheries industry.
