NIFT Gandhinagar is organizing a Craft Bazaar (Shilp Mela) from 16-18 February 2024 to celebrate India's artistic heritage.

Shri Lalit N. Singh Sandhu, IAS & MD GSHSD, and Prof. Dr Sameer Sood, Director, NIFT Gandhinagar, inaugurated the "Shilp Bazar" with NIFT faculty members and students, which witnessed a convergence of artisans, designers, and enthusiasts from across states of the nation.

Craft Bazaar is a vibrant celebration of creativity and craftsmanship. It has transformed the NIFT Campus into a haven of artistic expression where traditional crafts seamlessly merge with contemporary innovation.

The Craft Bazaar featured an impressive array of treasures, including intricately handwoven textiles such as Maheshwari, Chanderi, Kala Cotton, Ikat, and Kota Doria, each reflecting the mastery of artisans like Nasid Ansari, Mohammad Yusuf Ansari, Pareshbhai Vankar, Akula Nandi, Sudhanshu Mohandas, and Imran Husain. Beyond textiles, the event celebrated India's multifaceted craft heritage, showcasing exquisite works such as Mata – ni-  Pachedi by Rekhaben and Maheshbhai Chitara, Blue Pottery by Mukeshbhai of the Prajapati community, and Pakko embroidery by Premjibhai Harijan, among others.

A highlight of the Craft Bazaar was its emphasis on safeguarding traditional crafts amidst societal instability. NIFT Gandhinagar highlighted the importance of empowering artisans in today's dynamic world by providing a platform to exhibit their skills and products.

The event showed the synergy between academia and industry in supporting artisanal communities, highlighting the potential for meaningful partnerships to advance Indian craftsmanship. Moving into the Craft Bazaar was similar to entering a world of colours, textures, and traditions.

Artisans representing diverse communities captivated visitors with live demonstrations and exhibitions, offering insights into centuries-old techniques and cultural narratives. Each stall at the bazaar provided a unique glimpse into the mixture of Indian craftsmanship, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a realm of creativity and tradition. Beyond its role as a showcase for artisanal skills, the Craft Bazaar catalyzed dialogue and exchange, fostering deeper connections between artisans and consumers and nurturing a profound appreciation for India's rich cultural heritage.
