Smt. T.Nirmala Devi, Postmaster General, Central Region-Tamilnadu, Tiruchirappalli announced the release of a special cover commemorating the inclusion of the Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary as a Ramsar site. This significant milestone was celebrated on February 2nd, 2024, coinciding with the observance of World Wetlands Day. The special cover was released at Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary and was received by Dr. S Elangovan, District Forest Officer, Ariyalur.
Located in the Ariyalur district of Tamilnadu, the Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary is a sprawling wetland spanning an area of 453.7 hectares. This sanctuary serves over 500 species of flora and fauna. Originally an irrigation tank, it receives water from the Mettur dam and is further supplemented by the northeast monsoons from October to January. Recognizing its ecological importance, the Government of Tamilnadu designated it as the Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary in 1999.
The Ramsar convention, established in Iran in 1971, defines wetlands as "Areas of marsh, fen, peatland, or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt, including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed 6m." Wetland ecosystems provide support to both the livelihoods of local communities and a habitat for diverse plant and animal species. Since the Ramsar convention, the global community has recognized the need to conserve these areas and their biodiversity. India became a signatory to the Ramsar convention in 1982.
Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary was officially designated as a Ramsar site by the convention on January 31st, 2024. With this inclusion, India's Ramsar sites now total to 80, including notable locations like Longwood Shola in Nilgiris and three other sites in Karnataka. During his speech, District Forest Officer talked about the importance of water conservation and prudent usage of water and how the latest announcement of Ramsar site would help improve Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary. To mark this important event, Tree saplings were planted by the Postmaster General, Central Region, District Forest Officer, Ariyalur and other staff.
India Post is honoured to release the Special Cover on the newly included Ramsar site, Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary at Ariyalur district on February 2nd 2024, celebrated as World Wetlands Day, to create awareness among all about the importance of preserving this delicate ecosystem and boost the conservation efforts. The officers/staff of India Post and public attended this iconic event.
