Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Textiles, Consumer Affairs and Food and Public Distribution Shri Piyush Goyal inaugurated “Patsan Bhawan” a new Government Office Building Complex at New Town, Kolkata today. The building, situated in New Town, signifies an important step for the jute industry, as it will serve as the new base for the offices of the Jute Commissioner, the headquarters of the Jute Corporation of India and the National Jute Board.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that the inauguration of Patsan Bhawan marks a pivotal moment for the jute industry. The multi-storied building is a testament to the Central Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting and developing the jute industry, the Minister added. He further said that it encompasses the consolidation of crucial offices under one roof, thereby fostering greater cooperation and streamlined operations. The Minister hoped that this building will improve efficiency, effectiveness and work culture of the sector.
Shri Piyush Goyal also mentioned that Calcutta is very important heritage city and is very famous across the world. Calling jute as the fibre of future, the Minister stated that we need to expand the jute sector and give it the place it deserves. India produces more than 50% jute in the world, out of which more than 50% of jute is produced in West Bengal, he added.
Shri Piyush Goyal said that by enhancing productivity of local artisans & domestic industry, we will realise the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat under the leadership of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. He further said that Textiles sector has great potential and it should be realised by using innovations, latest technology and facilitations. The Minister also expressed confidence that there will be a big growth in this sector. He dedicated Patsan Bhawan to all those associated with jute industry and the whole country.
The Minister also urged all stakeholders associated with jute industry to showcase their diversified jute products at Mega Textiles Show “Bharat Tex” being organized by a Consortium of all Textiles Export Promotion Councils with the support of the Ministry of Textiles at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi in February 2024.

Smt. Darshana Vikram Jardosh, Minister of State for Railways and Textiles said that the Jute industry occupies an important place in the national economy of India in general and Eastern Region in particular i.e. West Bengal, Bihar, Odisa, Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It is one of the major industries in the eastern region, particularly in West Bengal. This new building will serve as a platform to cater needs of the industry in an organized manner, she added.

Smt. Rachna Saha, Secretary, Textiles and Chairperson, National Jute Board; Shri Moloy Chandan Chakraborty, Jute Commissioner and Smt. Prajakta Verma, Joint Secretary, Textiles among others were also present on the occasion.
Shri Goyal mentioned that the Government under the leadership of the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has acknowledged the decision of mandatory use of Jute in packaging for Jute Year 2023-24. The Minister said that this decision will contribute towards the revitalizing the jute sector.
