Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute of City Organises National Seminar and Workshop on Transforming Film Education in India

Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute is organising a three-day national seminar and workshop titled ‘Transforming Film Education’, which had a gala start today. The seminar was inaugurated today by Ms. Neerja Sekhar, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Shri Avichal Raj Kapur, Joint Secretary, University Grant Commission delivered his keynote address.

The Director of SRFTI, Filmmaker Himansu Sekhar Khatua while welcoming eminent film makers, educationists, and panelists said that the desired outcome of this seminar is to bring all film institutions to a platform to formulate cohesive filmmaking pedagogy. He called for taking challenges in today's film education collectively.

Ms. Sekhar, in her inaugural speech marked the seminar as important and seminal for surging forth the much needed discussion of the role that film schools can play in being game changers in the global entertainment landscape. She put forth ways in which film schools can cover gaps in skills and called for managerial leadership for students of film schools. She put in perspective the need to adapt film pedagogy to be in tune with the requirements of the fast changing entertainment industry.

It was followed by an insightful presentation by Dr. Kapur, an eminent educationist too and a key figure in implementing the National Education Policy 2020 in the country. He spoke in detail about the turning points in creating awareness and now implementing the NEP. He shared the pivotal role UGC has played in bringing changes within the education policy aimed at producing globally competent but yet locally relevant graduates.

The day one of the three- -day seminar concluded with a panel discussion on the Future of Filmmaking: An Industry perspective. Panelists C K Muraleedharan, Rakesh Ranjan, Sankalp Meshram, Amit Sen, Dr. Abhishek Kumar presented a road map that film schools can adopt and introspect aimed at creating an ecosystem of learning which are at once relevant and impactful. The session was moderated with educationist and filmmaker Michael Joseph.

The seminar calls forth for a surging of film education in India which responds to the fast changing global, technological requirements of the entertainment industry while reinforcing the country's rich film heritage.

The seminar was attended by eminent experts of cinema, film academics, and delegates from various film institutes across the country. Distinguished list of participants, included representatives from Film and Television Institute of India,Whistling Woods International,  K. R. Narayan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts Kerala,  Roopkala Kendro,  Dada Lakhmi Chand State University of Performing and Visual Arts, Biju Pattanaik Film & Amp Television Institute of Odisha, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, KIIT University, National Institute of Design, Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design & Amp Technology & AJK Mass Communication and Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia.

Experts such as Shri C.K. Murali Dharan and Chairman of the expert committee, Michael Manuel Joseph, Rakesh Ranjan, Pankaj Saxena, Amit Sen, Anupama Bose, Shankalp Meshram, Dhiraj Meshram, Utkarsha Kotian, Jijoy PR, Leenus L.K., Ganeswar Mohapatra, Susanta Bahinipati, Rakesh Das, Biswaranjan Behuria, Partha Vyas, Hitesh Chaurasia, Vipin Vijay, Dean, Dr. Sushrut Sharma, Registrar and all faculties and staff members of SRFTI were present on the occasion.
