Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards Body of India is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It  operates various schemes like Product Certification (ISI mark), Management Systems Certification,  Hall Marking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts and Laboratory Services for the benefit of the  industry and in turn aiming at consumer protection.

Children are the future and form the foundation on which a strong, vibrant and dynamic nation is built. The values children are exposed to in their formative years get inculcated in their young minds and serve as a force multiplier that has the capacity to transform the future of a nation. Quality consciousness, based on standardization, is one of the pillars of accelerated economic development  and priming students to appreciate the significance of quality, standards and standardization can serve  as a catalyst to improve societal awareness on these subjects. 

BIS has taken the initiative of creating Standards Clubs in educational institutions comprising teachers  and students as members. Through a variety of activities under these Clubs, young talents get learning  opportunities in the field of quality and standardization. Teachers have an important role in the  activities of the Clubs and would serve as beacons of light, guiding and motivating students to  channelize their creativity and enhance their scientific temperament. The Standards Clubs have  already garnered prominence and are being enthusiastically promoted by educational institutions to  supplement and improve the schooling experience of students and provide opportunities to better  their professional and personal growth.

In line with the above, Bureau of Indian Standards Inaugurated a Standards Club in the Prestigious  “Presidency College” in Chennai. Presidency College is a 183 year old institution started in the year  1840, produced 2 Nobel laureates ( Dr C V Raman, Dr Subramaniam Chandrasekar), 3 Bharat  Rathnas (Rajaji, C V Raman and C Subramaniam), 5 Chief Ministers including the present CM, one Abel  Laureate and has prestigious alumni like KM Kariappa, Dr Shantha and Chief Justice, M M Ismail.

The Inauguration of the Standards Club Programme was held Today, 22 Nov 2023 at 11:00 Hrs at  Tiruvalluvar Hall (M-28), Presidency College where Mahakavi Subramania Bharathi and Martin Luther  King Junior had addressed in 1906 and 1958 respectively. The College is ranked at No. 3 in the NIRF  ranking and also been awarded Management Systems certification including EOMS certification.

Smt.G.Bhavani, Scientist-E / Director & Head (Chennai Branch Office), BIS welcomed the participants and also explained the Programme Objectives. Dr. R. Raman, Principal, Presidency College, Chennai  delivered the Presidential Address. Shri. USP Yadav, Scientist-F & Deputy Director General Southern  Regional Office delivered the inaugural address. Shri. Gowththam, Scientist D/Joint Director & Shri.  Dhinesh Rajagopalan, Scientist-C/Deputy Director of BIS, Chennai Branch Office explained the  overview of BIS Activities and the new Initiatives of BIS, BIS Care APP, e-BIS respectively during the  Inaugural Event.
