A workshop on "Awareness of Point of Sale" was organized by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Mumbai Licensed Service Area (LSA organized) in Mumbai on Wednesday (October 25, 2023). The representatives from various Points of Sales (PoS) and Telecom Services Providers participated in it. The objective of the workshop was to make PoS representatives aware about the importance of adequate verification of each and every customer before enrolling someone as a subscriber and activating the mobile connection, while following the instructions issued by DoT in this regard from time to time.

Addressing the participants, Shri. C. K. Shukla, Additional Director General Telecom, DoT, Mumbai LSA highlighted the need of such workshop and impressed upon the PoS entities to scrupulously follow DoT guidelines while issuing SIMs. In a detailed presentation on the subject, Shri M. K. Jain, Director (Compliance) highlighted that, with the increasing social-economic activities in the country, the use of telecom resources, including mobile services is increasing rapidly for availing online services. It was pointed out that sometimes mobile connections, obtained by fraudsters in connivance with Point of Sale, are being misused to commit cybercrime/ frauds. The PoS representatives were also sensitized about not issuing fake/forged and pre-activated SIM. The Do’s and Don’ts related to issuing SIM card to any customer was also discussed.

Further, the new PoS guidelines issued by DoT HQ were also presented in which it is mandatory to assign a unique ‘PoS ID’ to PoS which shall be unique for all the TSPs across all Licensed Service Areas. The effective date of implementation of these new guidelines is December 1, 2023 for new Point of Sale and all the existing PoS shall also be registered by November 30, 2024.

The session was interactive and all the queries raised by representatives of PoS and TSPs were satisfactorily replied during the discussions. The workshop was attended by 25 participants who were representatives of Point of Sale and telecom service providers.
