PUNE, 21st OCTOBER 2023

On the 92nd birthday of veteran actor Shammi Kapoor, the National Film Development Corporation-National Film Archive of India (NFDC-NFAI) has announced that it will be celebrating the iconic role of Shammiji as Rocky, the drummer in ‘Teesri Manzil' (1966) by screening a brand new 4K restoration of this cinematic gem.

Under the National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM), the laborious efforts of the National Film Development Corporation - National Film Archive of India (NFDC-NFAI) are making these decades-old hits accessible to the citizens of Pune. Earlier this year, NFDC-NFAI celebrated Dev Anand’s centenary by screenings "Baazi"(1951), "C. I. D." (1956), "Asli-Naqli"(1962), "Tere Ghar Ke Samne"(1963), "Guide" (1965), "Jewel Thief" (1967), and "Johny Mera Naam" (1970), some in 4K and some in 35mm prints.

To preserve and restore the film heritage of India, the National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM) was launched in 2015 under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and it is deemed the world’s largest film restoration project.

The film reels of ‘Teesri Manzil’ were preserved in NFDC-NFAI's vaults for several decades in temperature- and relative humidity-controlled environments. It is this long-term preservation of the landmark films that has made the new 4K restoration possible. For restoration, each frame is meticulously restored, and time-induced aspects such as dust, dirt, splices, pinholes, tears, and scratches are digitally removed.

4K restored versions of these cinematic gems are not available with any other institution in the country, and the retrospective will be a rare chance for cinephiles to witness these films on the big screen.

The screening will be hosted at the main theater of the NFDC-NFAI, Law College Road, premises. The screenings are non-commercial and on a first-come, first-served basis.

NFDC-NFAI screens meticulously curated movies every Saturday as part of its Film Circle. Members of the Film Circle enjoy other benefits such as free access to the library, concessions on film festivals, reserved seats for some public screenings, etc.
