Union Minister for Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju has said that the farmers and fishermen across the country are getting the benefits of state-of-the-art research in climate and weather forecasting sector. India has performed well in this field for past 9 years, he added. The Union Minister was addressing a press conference after visiting and inspecting the High Altitude Cloud Physics Laboratory (HACPL) at Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra today. He expressed confidence and said that we are making progress in the field of timely prediction of natural calamities like cloud-burst and earthquake and we will soon be able to accurately predict about them and avoid the possible damages in near future. He informed that indigenous systems are being created for this purpose.  Shri Rijiju said that planning is being done to create resilient infrastructure in the country to efficiently face the natural calamities and India has also taken initiative at international level in this regard.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed confidence that the meteorological department will play a major role in enhancing strawberry production in Mahabaleshwar by providing accurate weather predictions.

Earlier in the day, the Union Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju visited High Altitude Cloud Physics Laboratory (HACPL) at Mahabaleshwar and took stock of the working of the laboratory.

Shri Kiren Rijiju inspected various departments in the lab and tried to understand the working of the systems in the lab. Project Director of the Centre Dr. G. Pandithurai updated the minister about various types of research work in the lab. The Union Minister also interacted with the scientists.

About HAPCL:

HACPL is established by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, to monitor critical atmospheric parameters and cloud parameters regularly.     Observations on regular basis at the HACPL is providing continuous data for the study of cloud microphysics and interaction between clouds and aerosol and the process of precipitation and related dynamics. HACPL has cloud-aerosol probes, video/ impact type Disdrometer, GPS radiosonde, microwave radiometric profiler etc. in continuous operational mode.
