Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research organises ‘Zero Waste - No Plastic’ Walkathon

As part of the Government of India initiative Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign 2023, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam  organized a Walkathon as a  Special  activity on 2nd October, 2023. The theme of the event was ‘Zero Waste - No Plastic’ for creating awareness about Swachchta and also to spread the message  to ban single use plastic. The event  was flagged off by Director, IGCAR   from K.V.School No. 2, Sadras, Kalpakkam Township  and passed through the neighbouring villages of Meiyur and Sadras.

Senior Officers and employees of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research /Bhabha Atomic Research Centre(Facilities)/General Services Organisation, teachers & students  of KV/AEC  School, CISF personnel  and Presidents of Panchayats of the neighbouring  villages, numbering 500 people, participated in the event  conveying their solidarity and commitment towards the cause. 

Students, employees and CISF personnel carried placards and banners displaying the  harmful effects of single use plastic. Announcements were made through the Public address system creating awareness regarding the harm caused by plastic to the environment.  A vehicle displaying banners on the theme moved along with the participants.

The walkathon halted briefly opposite Dutch Fort, Sadras which is a historical monument and declared as a heritage site by ASI. Director, IGCAR  addressed the gathering highlighting the need to preserve the planet by limiting the use of plastic. Senior officers and Local Village Panchyat Presidents  spoke on spreading awareness on  Zero Waste- No Plastic. Thereafter, a pledge was administered in English and Tamil  pledging for Zero Waste and no plastic. 

The event concluded with national anthem.
