DRI, Lucknow rescue 330 baby turtles

Acting on the basis of specific intelligence that a person involved in trading of Indian Roofed Turtles and Indian Tent Turtles, both of which are protected species under Schedule 1 of Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, has received a consignment of baby turtles in his house and is about to sell them in the grey market, the officers of DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence), Lucknow, chalked out an intricate plan to rescue the turtles and apprehend the offenders.

The officers of DRI, Lucknow reached the location and carried out searches in a residential premises in Unnao, UP in the wee hours of the morning on 01.08.2023 and rescued 330 baby turtles and nabbed one person. After the initial seizure under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, the case was handed over to Forest Department, Unnao, UP for further investigation.

In its effort to save the environment, Lucknow DRI has rescued 330 babies of Indian Roofed Turtles and Indian Tent Turtles, both of which are protected species under Schedule 1 of Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. Illegal trade and habitat degradation are major threats to these species.
