ICAR-CCRI, Nagpur conducts two-day training programme for citrus farmers of Madhya Pradesh

A two-day training program for citrus farmers of Madhya Pradesh was jointly organized by ICAR-Central Citrus Research Institute (CCRI), Nagpur and Krishi Vigyan Kendras of Agar Malwa and Shajapur districts on 12th and 13thJuly, 2023 respectively.The training was organised under the APEDA sponsored project "Capacity Development Programme on Adoption of Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) for Citrus Farmers”. More than 260 citrus growers participated in the program. Dr. Dilip Ghosh, Director, ICAR-CCRI, Nagpur presented the overall situation of citrus industry in India to trainee farmers and highlighted the importance of selection of suitable land, rootstock and planting materials for citrus cultivation.Dr. Ghosh encouraged the farmers to adopt scientific package of practices for citrus cultivation and technologies developed by the institute and briefed about upcoming varieties of ICAR-CCRI. He also assured solution of the problem of scarcity of good quality planting materials through Clean Plant Program in near future.
 

Shajapur and Agar Malwa are the popular citrus growing belts of Madhya Pradesh but lack of availability of quality planting material is proving as a major hindrance to citrus cultivation in the region. Dr. Ghosh encouraged progressive citrus growers to come forward, form FPOs and start nurseries by learning containerized nursery technology and signing MoU with ICAR-CCRI. This step can meet the demands of quality planting material of the region to a great extent.  

In the technical sessions, scientists from ICAR-CCRI guided farmers on various important aspects of citrus cultivation. Dr. R.K. Sonkar guided farmers on Citrus Orchard Establishment and Management, Dr. A.K. Das dealt in details with the aspect of Disease management of Citrus, Dr. N.M. Meshram guided farmers about the control measures of various insect pests which attack citrus crop and Dr. Sangeeta Bhattacharyya made farmers aware about Citrus Decline and the related Rejuvenation Technologies. CCRI Technical Bulletins on “Nagpuri Santra ki Unnat Baghbani” were distributed to farmers.

Mrs. Poonam Kapoor, Regional Head (APEDA), Bhopal, briefed about the APEDA schemes for citrus exporters.Dr.A.K.Dixit, (Head, KVK, Agar Malwa) and Dr. G.R Ambawatia (Head, KVK, Shajapur) expressed their vote of thanks in the respective programs.The program ended with field visit of expert team of scientists to local citrus orchards of farmers.
