AIIMS Guwahati will be a boon for North East Region said Prof. (Dr) Ashok Puranik, Executive Director of AIIMS while addressing a Press Conference at Guwahati today. Bridging the healthcare gap in North Eastern Region, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate the All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Guwahati, Assam on 14th April, 2023, which will be the first AIIMS of North East region, he added.
Briefing the Media Dr. Ashok Puranik said that AIIMS Guwahati have started the patient care services via telemedicine from 2022 and limited OPD for local residents started. Most of the clinical departments are functional. He further stated that MBBS course started in AIIMS Guwahati from the academic year 2020-21. The first batch of MBBS students at AIIMS, Guwahati started their classes from a temporary campus at Narakasur hilltop, in the Institute of Paramedical Sciences adjoining Guwahati Medical College. On the 5th of March 2022, the academic and administrative activities shifted to the permanent campus at Changsari.
Currently there are 199 MBBS students, 78 faculty members, 125 nursing officers and 12 senior residents at AIIMS Guwahati. To facilitate clinical exposure and clinical postings as per curriculum for 4th and 5th semester students, MOU has been signed with Maligaon Railway Hospital.
Smt. Pavni Gupta, Deputy Director of PIB Guwahati moderated the Press Conference. Among others Dr. Bhupen Barman, DMS, HoD General Medicine, AIIMS, Guwahati and Dr. Kaustav Kumar Bairagi, DMS, HoD Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, AIIMS Guwahati were present during the press conference.

Brief about AIIMS Guwahati:
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) - Guwahati, was planned under phase V of the 22 new AIIMS of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY). The foundation stone of the Institute was laid by the Honourable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi Ji on May 26, 2017. The location of site is Changsari in Kamrup District of Assam. Total Plot Area is 189.20 Acres. The works for construction commenced from 02.05.2019.
PROJECT BRIEF
Union Cabinet approved setting up of AIIMS at Guwahati, Assam at a cost of Rs. 1123 crore in May 2017. M/S HITES was appointed as the Executing Agency for the project in May 2018. The work for construction of new AIIMS was awarded in May 2019 after the earth filling of 80 Acre of site by the State Government. The construction work on the project site is 85% complete at present.

Activities carried out by AIIMS, Guwahati:
Multiple community outreach programmes have been conducted on Stroke awareness (May 2022), health awareness of adolescent girls of SOS village (July 2022), Training of ANM and ASHA on basics of breast feeding (August 2022), Awareness on Gynaecological cancers at Jala sub centre (September 2022), Awareness on Mental health at Kamalpur PHC (October 2022), Awareness on Breast Cancer at Bezera Community Health Centre (October 2022), a multi-disciplinary health camp ( November 2022), Hearing and Ear check-up camp with distribution of free hearing aids (November 2022)
Various important days and academic programmes have been conducted by the institute, such as International Yoga day on 21st June, World ORS week on 20th July, National CPR day on 21st July, CME on World Breast Feeding week on 5th August, CME on Overview of Leukemia and Lymphoma on 14th September, World Sepsis Day on 14th September, World Heart Day on 29th September, Basic Pediatric Epilepsy Workshop and World Anatomy Day on 15th October, World Anesthesia Day on 17th October, CME on stroke awareness on 29th October, Physiology Friday on 11th November, ISARCON 2022 on 11th-12th November, NRP Advanced Provider course on 10th December, Med Tech 2022 on 22nd November, National Pharmacovigilance Week(17-23 September), World Antimicrobial awareness week (18-24 November), National workshop on "Good Clinical Practice” on 25th/26th November etc.
CLINICAL SERVICES:
The patient care services have been started via telemedicine from August 2022 and limited OPD for local residents started from September 2022. Most of the clinical departments are functional. Average OPD footfall at AIIMS Guwahati is around 150 patients per day at present. Services available includes Day Care, Pharmacy (Amrit Pharmacy), Laboratory facilities, Radiological Investigations.
The state-of-the-art hospital will provide high quality patient care services in various Specialties and Super specialties including Cardiology, Neurology, Burns and Plastic Surgery, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Interventional Radiology etc.
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES:
MBBS course started in AIIMS Guwahati from the academic year 2020-21. The academic programme commenced on 12th January 2021. Research activities:
In 2022, the faculty members have contributed 83 research publications and 14 book chapters. They are associated with collaborative research projects namely Sophisticated Analytical and Technical Help Institute (SATHI), ASEAN-India Research Training Fellowship (AIRTF) schemes and ICMR-DHR funded extramural project on heat stress among factory workers in North-East India. The Research Cell of AIIMS, Guwahati conducted a workshop on Research Grant Writing on 17th March, 2023 in collaboration with the Department of Biochemistry and a manuscript writing workshop on 1st and 2nd April, 2023 in collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics.
Future plans:
The facilities envisaged at AIIMS, Guwahati include Hospital Complex with 720 beds, Medical College with 125 seats, postgraduate courses, Nursing College with 75 seats, Ayush Block with 30 beds, residential accommodation for faculty and staff, hostel accommodation for UG and PG students along with outdoor and indoor sports facilities, Amphitheater, Night Shelter, Guest House, Auditorium complex, Community Centre etc.
The Institute will also provide state of the art cancer care, advanced laparoscopy facilities, trauma care and advanced futuristic interventions like robotic surgery, organ transplantation, regenerative medicine, genetics and simulation lab etc. People of Assam state and bordering states of Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Manipur, will be benefited from the Specialty/Superspecialty health care facilities of AIIMS, Guwahati. The Institute also has a strong commitment towards research, both basic and health-oriented, with special emphasis on translational research directed towards the people of North-East India. The Institute shall also be a source of direct and indirect employment for the youth of the state and boost the local economy.
