Posted On: 30 MAR 2023 8:06PM by PIB Chennai

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India which operates under the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, ensures that quality goods and services reach consumers through various schemes.

Hallmarking is the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in the precious metal article.

The objective of Hallmarking Scheme is to protect the public against adulteration and to obligate manufacturers to maintain legal standard of fineness. Hallmark is a standard mark on gold jewellery.

Presently, hallmarking in gold jewellery comprises 3 markings namely the BIS Hallmark, Purity of Gold in carats & fineness and 6-digit Alphanumeric HUID code.

HUID - Hallmarking unique ID is a unique 6-digit alphanumeric code which is marked on each gold jewellery article. Hallmarking of Gold is presently mandatory in 288 districts in India.

In Tamilnadu, it is mandatory in 26 districts out of 38 districts.

Consumers can verify the authenticity of the HUID on Hallmarked gold jewellery by clicking on “Verify HUID icon on the BIS Care app.” Consumers can get their Hallmarked jewellery tested at any of the BIS recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) after paying testing charges of Rs. 200/-. Hallmarking Scheme provides a third-party assurance and satisfaction that the customer gets right purity of gold for the given price.

Hallmarking will provide a clear indication of a jeweller’s capability, strong evidence of commitment to quality and assurance of consistency in purity.

As per Government of India, Ministry of Consumer Affairs order, only HUID Hallmarked jewellery is to be sold by the BIS registered jewellers from 01 April 2023.
