Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Chennai, in coordination with Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS), organized a panel discussion on the topic “Indian Economy and Climate Change: Challenges and Way Ahead” on March 23, 2023,as a 'Jan Bhagidari' (people’s participation) event in the context of India's G20 Presidency.Four distinguished economists from Chennai working on topics related to climate change, its mitigation and adaptation, viz., Professor Jayaraman, Senior Fellow, M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai; Professor KS Kavikumar, Madras School of Economics; Professor RR Krishnamurthy, Applied Geology, University of Madras, Chennai, and Dr. A. ArivudaiNambi, Director & Strategy Head (Climate Resilience Practice) World Resources Institute (WRI), India participated in the discussion and Professor Venkatachalam, RBI Chair Professor from MIDS moderated the discussion.

The event started with welcome address by Shri N. Gopalaswami (Retd. IAS), Chairperson, MIDS, emphasizing the need for aligning India’s climate change objectives to its overall developmental agenda. This was followed by Shri S.M.N Swamy, Regional Director RBI Chennai, delivering the inaugural address. Key takeaways from the panel discussion underscored the concerted efforts required from both the developed and developing economies to solve issues related to climate change, need for setting our country specific objective keeping in mind our endowments and structural issues and accordingly construct evaluation parameters in line with the same.

The panel discussion was well received by the audience comprising research scholars, faculty members, practitioners, and students.The Q&A session added to the enriching experience. The event ended with handing over gifts to the distinguished panelists by Smt. Uma Sankar, CGM, RBI Chennai and vote of thanks by Dr Shromona Ganguly, Assistant Adviser, RBI, Chennai.
