Posted On: 17 MAR 2023 10:47AM by PIB Ahmedabad

The Indian Planetary Science Association (IPSA) is organizing the 4th Indian Planetary Science Conference (IPSC-2023) at Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad. It is a three-day conference scheduled during 22-24 March 2023.

IPSA was established to promote Planetary Science activities in India, with an important task to create a much-needed Planetary Science community in India, in the context of future planetary missions, to Moon, Mars and Venus, and other planetary bodies, to be launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), DOS. IPSA will encourage the Scientists and Accademia of India and generate a long-term vision with the participation of all stakeholders.

Initiated in 2020 as the first of its kind in the country, the main objective of IPSC is to provide a single platform for the planetary researchers to present and discuss their research accomplishments and subsequently drive the planetary exploration for India. The IPSC-2023 conference will discuss the Indian planetary missions already launched, the science derived from them, and provide a framework for future Indian missions and related challenges in terms of instrument development and exploration. The conference aims at highlighting the recent advances, results and studies related to the atmosphere, surface, and interior of planetary bodies in the solar system, including planetary processes, and early solar system evolution. Around two hundred delegates comprising young researchers, distinguished scientists and engineers will attend the conference from various academic and research institutes across the country and the ISRO/DOS centres.

Shri S. Somanath, Chairman, ISRO & Secretary, DoS, will inaugurate the IPSC-2023 and deliver the inaugural talk on “Indian Capabilities for Space and Planetary Exploration” on 22 March morning. Shri A. S. Kiran Kumar, Former Chairman ISRO/Secretary DOS, and currently the Chairman of the PRL Council of Management, will deliver a keynote address in the inaugural function.

The scientific programme consists of the various sessions, viz., Lunar Science and Exploration, Martian Atmosphere and Surface Processes, Space and Planetary Instrumentation, Solar System Processes, Meteorites and Small Bodies, Venusian Atmosphere and Surface Processes, and Astrobiology, Astrochemistry and Exoplanets.

A public Lecture on 22 March evening at 6 PM is also arranged as a part of the 5th PRL–IAPT Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Lecture.
