INDIA'S FIRST UNDERWATER METRO TUNNEL CONSTRUCTED IN RECORD 66 DAYS

The East-West Metro Corridor (Green Line) is now operational from Salt Lake Sector V to Sealdah stations over a stretch of 9.3 KMs. Entire East-West Metro Corridor between Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector-V, over a stretch of 16.55 KMs is expected to be operational in October, 2023, thus connecting Sealdah and Howrah railway stations, which are the two busiest railway stations in India and will provide interchanging point at Esplanade with North-South Corridor (Blue Line).
This corridor has the distinction of being the very first under the river transportation tunnel in India, below a mighty river like Hooghly. This tunnel, a construction marvel, is 520-m long rail system and 13-m below the river bed. With the concerted efforts of all, this unique tunnel has been constructed under the river in a record 66 days.
India’s first underwater (subaqueous tunnel) rail system connects Howrah station complex on the Western bank of the Hooghly river to Armenian Ghat on the Eastern bank.7908705832
Once commissioned, Howrah Metro station will be one of the deepest Metro stations in the world, which is 30-m deep below the ground.
