Coastal erosion should be taken seriously: NDMA Advisor

In the current scenario, coastal erosion is an issue which has to be taken seriously, says Shri.Kunal sathyarthi IFS, Advisor (Policy & Planning) National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).He was speaking at a national workshop held today in Thiruvananthapuram regarding the draft policy on mitigating measures to prevent soil erosion and resettlement of displaced persons affected by soil erosion. Shri.Sathyarthi pointed out that though erosion is occurring on a slow pace , it has to be seen seriously.
Inaugurating the workshop, Kerala Chief Secretary and State Disaster Management Authority CEO Shri. VP Joy said that innovative methods including Tetrapod used in the state are very effective to prevent coastal erosion. Further study in this area is imperative. Coastal erosion is as serious an issue as climate change. The spread of mangrove forests is a natural way to prevent coastal erosion. Mr. VP Joy said that Kerala will achieve the goal of climate neutrality in 2050 before then. He clarified that measures to prevent coastal erosion are to be thought at the global level and implemented in the local level.
Additional Chief Secretary & Convener Kerala State Disaster Management Authority Shri A Jaithilak, National Disaster Management Authority Member Shri KS Watsa, State Disaster Commissioner Mrs. TV Anupama were also present on the occasion.
Representatives from 14 states participated in the workshop jointly organized by National Disaster Management Authority and State Disaster Management Authority. National policy to mitigate coastal and riverine erosion, disaster mitigation projects, rehabilitation of coastal zones, planning and implementation of mitigation and rehabilitation projects were among the topics deliberated in the one day workshop.
