Testing of 5G trial services in Jamnagar by DoT, Gujarat LSA

Posted On: 14 JUN 2022 1:53PM by PIB Ahmedabad

On 13.06.2022 and 14.06.2022, a team of officials from Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Gujarat LSA - Shri Mahesh Piplani Director and Shri Suryash Gautam Assistant Divisional Engineer, visited the 5G trial sitesof Reliance Jio Infocom (RJIL)in the Jamnagar Reliance Industries Limited refinery and township.

In the township, where RJIL has installed indigenously developed 21 5G small cells in standalone mode, data download speed which of about 1.25 Gbps was recorded. These made in India 5G small cells are compact single-box and zero-foot print solution that can be deployed even on a 10-15 meter pole, to provide localized 5G coverage.

In the refinery, RJIL has installed two 5G small cells with distributed antenna technology and has implemented “Robotics Warehouse Automation Over 5G” use case. Two processes have been automated with the help of AMR (Autonomous Mobile Robots) for its polypropylene product :-

1.       Empty bag transfer - Inbound to staging

2.       Product transfer - Pallet transfer from bagging line to storage

In this entire process the AMR travels along dynamic routes, detects obstacles as it is powered with artificial intelligence for advanced location and navigation on real time basis. The use case is of low latency communications (URLLC) i.e. less than ~ 25ms latency in the operation and the robots are able to communicate with the Fleet Management System (FMS) located at Ahmedabad flawlessly.

The FMS is a software for integrated multi-robot solutions that enables complete andcentralized management of robot fleet. FMS communicates over 5G with the robots, conveyor sensors and UI, and based on the status received from these clients, it performs actions such as task allocation, task scheduling, route planning for the robots, fleet monitoring etc.

Department of Telecommunications (DoT)on 27.05.2021, for 5G testing in Gujarat, allotted license and spectrum to :

  1. Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) in Gandhinagar (for urban), Mansa (for semi urban) and Unava, (rural)
  2. Reliance Jio Infocomm in Ahmedabad (urban) and Jamnagar (semi urban / rural)

The spectrum was initially allotted for six months which had been extended for further nine months.

In the recent past on 11.11.2021, the DoT Gujarat LSA team had inspected and observedthe peak data download speedof 4 Gbps at the Mahatma Mandir VIL 5G test site of Gandhinagar. On 22.12.2021, a 5G innovative solution, which was first of its kind to be tested by DoT in India for the rural broadband coverage, comprised of the 5G BTS installed at the Unava town of Mansa taluka in Gandhinagar district and the 5G outdoor customer premise equipment (CPE) in the Ajol village of Mansa taluka in Gandhinagar district. The aerial distance between the two locations was 17 KM and the peak data download speed of more than 105 Mbps was observed.

The technical team of Gujarat LSAhad conducted detailed 5G testing at the Mahatma Mandir trial site of VIL in Gandhinagar city on 04.02.2022, at the Unava town of Mansa taluka in Gandhinagar district on 29.04.2022 and at the at the Prahalad Nagar trial site of RJIL in Ahmedabad city on 26.05.2022, in accordance with the Telecom Engineering Centre schedule and procedure.
