A high-level delegation from Argentina headed by their Minister Mr. Santiago Andres Cafiero visited Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) at BARC Campus in Mumbai on Wednesday (April 27, 2022) to review the ongoing bilateral cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. The delegation also explored new areas of cooperation and collaboration of future. Both the delegations particularly discussed the ongoing collaboration between BRIT, a commercial arm of DAE and Argentinian Company M/s. INVAP for setting up the facility on turnkey basis for the production of High Specific Activity (HSA), Molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) for supply of radioisotope products used in healthcare industry.

HSA Mo-99 is an important raw material for production of 99Mo/99mTc generators for preparation of 99mTc based radiopharmaceuticals used in diagnostic nuclear medicine. With this facility, India will be one of the few countries in the world to have the production capability of medical grade HSA Mo-99 using Low Enriched Uranium target. This will make India self-sufficient in HSA Mo-99 and will also enable India to export it. Dr. Santiago also had a tour of Fission Moly Plant (FMP) facility BRIT at BARC.
Dr. A. K. Mohanty, Director, BARC, received the high-level delegation. Dr. Mohanty was accompanied by Mr. P. Mukherjee, Chief Executive, Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology (BRIT), Mr. Ranajit Kumar, Head, Nuclear Controls and Planning Wing and Shri Bishwadip Dey, Joint Secretary (External Relations & Power), DAE.

Later, Argentine Minister Mr. Cafiero was also received by Mr. B. C. Pathak, CMD, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. They had discussions on nuclear power sector and explored the scope and opportunities for future collaborations. This has been stated by Dr. R.K. Vatsa, Outstanding Scientist & Head of Public Awareness Division in BARC.
