Pondicherry University, EMRC launches free online courses on SWAYAM on 2nd August 2021

As learning continues online due to the COVID restrictions, the Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMRC) of Pondicherry University launches two new Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) being offered by Pondicherry University faculty. They are free of cost on Government of India’s e-learning portal for any interested learner of any age from Puducherry from anywhere in the world.

The courses are on Photojournalism (5 credits) by Dr. Radhika Khanna and Media Laws and Ethics (3 credits) by Dr. S. Arulselvan. All students of Puducherry higher education institutions and technical institutions are encouraged to enroll for these elective multidisciplinary courses to augment their learning.

The MOOCs are of 15 weeks duration, starting online from 2nd August 2021 on the Ministry of Education’s SWAYAM platform. The last date of enrolment for the courses is 31st August 2021. These online courses have been designed to develop conceptual knowledge and professional and practical skills that can lead to employability.

The course on Photojournalism features both eminent and young Indian photographers, photo historians and curators, including Avani Rai, Avinash Pasricha, Desikan Krishnan, Dinesh Krishnan, Gopinath Sricandane, Gurinder Osan, India in Photobook, Madhuraj, Navroze Contractor, Nimit Nigam, PoochiVenkat, Prashant Panjiar, Raghu Rai, Prof. Sabeena Gadihoke, Sanjay Prasad Ganguly, Saravanan Janakarajan, Saumya Khandelwal, Selvaprakash Lakshmanan, Shantanu Krishnan, SR Raghunathan, Tanvi Mishra and Vicky Roy.

Photojournalism introduces learners to a comprehensive understanding of digital photography along with the qualities and skills needed to become a photojournalist. At one's own pace, any person including working professionals and journalists can enroll and also explore various dimensions of this creative field covering travel, wildlife, birds, sports, art, culture and social documentary photography along with news photography and photo editing.

The course on Media Laws and Ethics offers many ideas related to law making in India, which includes a brief history of the Constitution of India, significant laws enacted related to media and communication since the colonial period, till date. It also tries to impart knowledge about morals and ethics. This course is primarily aimed at the students of communication, journalism, and media studies programmes.

These courses are being received well with nearly 1000 learners enroled for Photojournalism and 600 enrolments for Media Laws and Ethics till date.
