One Year online educational programme titled “Certified Packaging Engineer” (CPE) Course for both working and fresh Engineering Graduates has been launched by Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) Chennai Centre today and the first batch will be scheduled to be commenced on 15th July, 2021, announced Dr. Tanweer Alam – Director (I/c), Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), in a press meet held in Chennai today.

While addressing the media person at PIB Chennai, he said “Certified Packaging Engineer” (CPE) Course is listed in PM’s initiative for the celebration of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, India @ 75 years of Independence’ and it is for the first time in India such an online course has been started for engineering graduates”.

The objective of the course is to create a Packaging Engineer with complete knowledge from design conception to manufacturing; and utilize it as a key differentiator for his/her relevant industry/business. More than 20 international faculties will be part of this programme and will share their expertise.

As per the report of Exim Bank 2020, availability of skilled manpower has been a continuous challenge for the labour intensive packaging industry. As per the industry sources, more than 35000 packaging experts are required currently for the Indian packaging industry, while only 1.5% of the demand is produced each year in the country. The lack of skilled manpower is often also observed at the top management positions in the industry largely due to the dearth of skilled packaging professionals. “Certified Packaging Engineer” online course has been started to cater skilled manpower needs of the industry.

The IIP has also identified 75 traditional products from across India for improving their packaging, as per international standards. This initiative is part of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, India @ 75 years of independence” and it is being implemented in all the States and UTs of India. Trichy Banana, Krishnagiri Mango, Tanjavur doll, Srivilliputhur Palkova and Kovilpatti Kadalaimittai have been chosen by the Tamil Nadu government under this program and the IIP is working on developing world class packaging of these products by collaborating with all the stake holders.

Shri. R R Kumar – Regional Chairman, IIP-Chennai and Shri R Pon Kumar - Deputy Director and Regional Head, Indian Institute of Packaging, Chennai also spoke at the press meet.
