588 grams gold worth Rs.29.74 lakhs seized by Chennai Air Customs

Based on intelligence that gold was likely to be smuggled, one Nassarul Huq , 23, of Chennai who arrived from Dubai by Air India Express flight AI-906 was intercepted at exit on suspicion of carrying gold. On personal search four bundles of gold paste weighing 523 grams were recovered from his underwear. On extraction 430 grams of gold valued at Rs. 21.74 lakhs was recovered and seized under Customs Act.

In another case, one Sivasankar Reddy, 34, of Kadappa who arrived from Singapore by Air India Express Flight IX-1687 was intercepted at exit. On search of his check-in baggage one cordless screwing machine was found inside. On  opening the machine one round gold piece weighing 158 grams valued at Rs. 8 lakhs was found concealed inside. The same was recovered and seized under customs Act.

Total 588 grams of gold worth Rs.29.74 lakhs was seized under Customs Act in two cases by Chennai Air Customs.

Further investigation is under progress, according to a press release issued by the Commissioner of Customs, Chennai International Airport.
