Farmers in Punjab, Haryana and HP observe necessary precautions in agricultural activities
PM Garib Kalyan Package ensures the interests of the poor

Agricultural activities having begun in the states of Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradeshand country-wide lockdown extended till 3rd May,farmers observe necessary precautions while engaging in their day-to-day agricultural activities. During this extended period of lockdown, farmers are present in the fields to oversee operations. Fully aware about COVID-19, every necessary precaution is being actively taken by them. Farmer Surinder Kumar of Village Ahri in District Jhajjar of Haryana said that they are taking all important precautionslike covering their faces, washing their hands regularly and changing clothes when returning from the fields. Amarjit Singh, a farmer based in Jalandhar, expressed his complete satisfaction over the procurement process.

The Government of India has launched a Rs 1.70 lakh crore relief package under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana to help poor to cope with effects during and after the Lockdown. One of the targets of package is to provide free gas cylinders to 8 crore poor under for three months starting from April. Satbir Kaur of Ajnala in Punjab is happy to receive a free LPG cylinder under the Ujjwala Scheme and expresses her gratitude to the Modi government for the same. Yangchen from a village in Spiti also shared a similar feeling and appealed to people stay home and be safe. As of now, 97.8 lakh Gas cylinders have distributed among the beneficiaries.

Showing a great amount of zeal and responsibility, various NGOs have also been complementing Government’s effort. Kanya Mahavidyalaya in Jalandhar is among the various bodies making their contribution in getting face masks stitched and distributed to the farmers, factory workers and villagers free of cost. While at Gugwaal Haar village situated in Hajipur Block of District Hoshiarpur, Punjab, a group of young women, are working tirelessly to safeguard residents of their village and those in the vicinity, vulnerable migrant workers and ration and food supply distributors from COVID 19 infections by making and distributing face masks. The group is led by the village Sarpanch Narinder Singh. Whereas Self Help Groups of Village Kothi in District Mandi (HP) have emerged as community warriors.

More than 32 crore poor people have received financial assistance of Rs 29,352 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package. This shows that relief package has been extremely helpful to them during these testing times and farmers are supporting the steps taken by Government of India to contain spread of COVID-19.
