Commerce Minister reviewed the Status of Special Economic Zone of Maharashtra in Mumbai yesterday

Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal reviewed the status of Special Economic Zones in Maharashtra yesterday at Shyadri Guest House, Mumbai.

He said that all steps should be taken to facilitate businesses in the SEZs.

Some restrictions imposed by the current legal framework were brought to his notice; he said that immediate action to amend the rules to create a more business-friendly environment. It should be taken including a framework to utilize spare capacity of SEZ units by taking on job-work from the domestic tariff area in consultation with Department of Revenue. 

In FY 2018-19, the SEZ zones in Maharashtra reported a turnover of Rs. 1,13,734 crores which is roughly 20% of exports from Maharashtra state. SEZ Gems and Jewelry export units have shown a growth of 10% over last year; biotechnology sector has shown growth of 11.7% and engineering units have shown a 30% growth over last financial year.
