Weavers in Tribal Areas

As informed by Office of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, as per 3rdHandloom Census, 2009-10, there are 6,96,932 Scheduled Tribe weavers/workers in the country who are involved in weaving activities including traditional weaving.

To promote the handloom sector, including traditional weaving, office of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms has been implementing following schemes throughout the country, including tribal areas:-

 

              I.               National Handloom Development Programme (NHP)

 

           II.               Comprehensive Handloom Cluster Development Scheme (CHCDS)(limited to 8 Mega Handloom Clusters in 7 States)

 

         III.               Handloom Weavers’ Comprehensive Welfare Scheme (HWCWS)

 

        IV.               Yarn Supply Scheme (YSS).

 

Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Ltd.(TRIFED) has also promoted such traditional weaving by means of imparting training through the following modules:-

 

I.

Comprehensive Training Programme (CTP-60 days)

In each of the modules number of trainee weavers is limited to 20

II.

Design Workshop Training (DWT -21 days)

III.

Product Development Programme (PDP-30 days)

 

TRIFED has associated 5108 Traditional Tribal Weavers.  It has trained 300 weavers of different tribal areas in their traditional weaving practices.

 

Ministry of Textiles has released an amount of Rs.33.95 crore under Scheduled Tribes Sub-Plan during the year 2017-18 under their schemes to promote the handloom sector, including traditional weaving.  Besides this, TRIFED also allocates funds for their training modules per year as under;

 

        I.         Comprehensive Training Programme    -           Rs.3.70 lakh

     II.         Design Workshop Training                                Rs.2.00 lakh

   III.         Product Development Programme         -           Rs.0.80 lakh

Total :   Rs.6.50  lakh
