Policy for Elderly People

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare had launched the “National Programme for the Health Care of Elderly” (NPHCE) during 2010-11 to address the various health related problems of elderly people.

 

The major objectives of the NPHCE are establishment of Department of Geriatrics in identified Medical Institutions as Regional Geriatric Centres (RGCs) for different regions of the country and to provide dedicated health facilities at District Hospitals, Community Health Centres (CHCs), Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Sub-Centres (SCs) levels through State Health Society. The details of the funds released to States/UTs and to Regional Medical Institution are given below:

* From the F.Y. 2015-16 onwards, the programme has been covered under NCD Flxible Pool including 4 other programmes i.e. National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI), National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes,Cardiovascular Diseases (NPCDCS), National Mental Health Programme (NMHP) and National Tobaco Control Programme (NTCP). Hence, funds released (during 2015-17) is for the NCD-flexible Pool covering all 5 programmes.

A total no. 20 Medical Institutions had been indentified to establish the Department of Geriatrics under the programme by the end of 12th Five Year Plan. Out of this, 08 medical institutions had been indentified during 11th FYP and remaining 12 were to be covered during 12th FYP. Details of the selected medical institutions to establish RGCs are given at Annexure-B. As on date, financial assistance have been provided to 19 medical institutions to establish the Department of Geriatrics and to carry out tertiary care activities under the programme. Funds could not be released to remaining 01 institution i.e. Government Medical College, Nagpurdue to non-submission of signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the State Government of Maharashtra and respective medical institution.

 

The Minister of State (Health and Family Welfare), Smt Anupriya Patel stated this in a written reply in the Lok Sabha here today.
