Share of Textile Sector in GDP

As per the National Accounts Statistics (NAS), the share of the textiles manufacturing to Gross Domestic Product is 1.89% (2012-13) and 1.87% in 2013-14.

As per the Annual Survey of Industry (ASI), the percentage of workforce employed in Textiles and Wearing Apparel of formal sector among major industries is 18.73% in 2012-13 and 18.28% in 2013-14.

Production and growth rate of export of the textile sector during 2014-15 and 2015-16 are given below:

Government has taken various initiatives, besides implementing schemes/programmes to promote textile sector, which inter-alia include (i) Amended TUFS Scheme and in-situ Upgradation of Powerloom (for technology development); (ii) Integrated Scheme for Skill Development (for skill development); (iii) Scheme for Incubation in Apparel manufacturing (SIAM); (iv) Scheme for Integrated Textile Parks (for infrastructure development); (v) A special package of reforms for the garments and made-Ups sector.

The above information was given by the Minister of State, Textiles, Shri Ajay Tamta today, in a written reply to a Lok Sabha question.
