Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), a Unit of the Department of Atomic Energy under the Government of India, is executing the manufacture of Steam Generator Tubes for the upcoming fleet-mode 700MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) being constructed by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) / National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).

 

The Steam Generator (SG) Tubes are being supplied by NPCIL to its vendor as a free-issue material. Previously, these tubes were imported, and NFC has emerged as a single supplier of these critical tubes for indigenous nuclear applications. Initially, the cycle time for the supply of these SG tubes was 180 days, while with the improvements in the number of productivity, recovery and quality, the cycle time for supply of each set has been reduced over a period of time.

NFC has manufactured the 12th set of SG tubes in a record span of 81 days and supplied to NPCIL on September 28, 2026. This reflects NFC’s enhanced manufacturing capabilities and commitment to meeting critical delivery schedules for the Nuclear Power Programme.

 

With this consignment, NFC has completed the supply of SG tubes for three of the ten reactors sanctioned under the fleet-mode programme. So far, NFC has supplied approximately 58,000 tubes for 23 Steam Generators for India’s civil Nuclear Power Programme, including reactors outside the fleet-mode programme.

 

 The consignment was flagged off by Shri Praveen Bhatt, Vice President & Head of Nuclear Business, Heavy Engineering Division, M/s. L&T, in the presence of Dr. Komal Kapoor, Chairman & Chief Executive, NFC.

Congratulating the NFC team on this achievement, Shri Praveen Bhatt appreciated the efforts made in ensuring the timely availability of these critical components for Steam Generator manufacturing and consistently delivering high-quality tubes meeting the stringent requirements of nuclear applications. Further, he expressed confidence in continued collaboration between L&T and NFC to address future requirements.

 

 Dr. Komal Kapoor stated that NFC continues to take up challenging assignments and successfully develops & manufactures several critical and strategic products of national importance, meeting stringent specifications and quality requirements in line with international standards. Dr. Kapoor emphasized NFC’s continued commitment to support India’s Nuclear Power Programme through indigenous manufacturing capabilities and technological excellence.

 

As envisaged by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, these efforts contribute to strengthening indigenous manufacturing capabilities and support the national goal of achieving 100GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
