The National Institute of Homoeopathy (NIH), Kolkata today celebrated its Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years of dedicated service in homoeopathic education, research and patient care. As part of the celebrations, a state-of-the-art Modular Operation Theatre and a Centre of Excellence were inaugurated, significantly strengthening the Institute’s clinical, academic and research infrastructure.

The celebrations were graced by Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Ayush and Minister of State, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and Shri Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State for Education. Jyotirmay Singh Mahato and Samik Bhattacharya, Members of Parliament, and Sumana Sarkar, MLA, Government of West Bengal, along with Sh. Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, senior officials, faculty members, doctors, students and other stakeholders, were also present on this occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Prataprao Jadhav said that completion of 50 years is a significant milestone in the journey of NIH Kolkata. He said the Golden Jubilee is not only an occasion to acknowledge the Institute’s achievements but also an opportunity to chart its priorities for the coming decades.

The Minister said that the newly inaugurated facilities reflect the Government’s commitment to strengthening Ayush institutions with modern infrastructure, quality education, advanced research capabilities and improved patient-care facilities. He emphasised the need to integrate the strengths of traditional systems of medicine with contemporary technology, research and innovation to address emerging healthcare requirements.

Shri Jadhav also underlined the importance of strengthening homoeopathic education and research and creating greater opportunities for students, researchers and young professionals. He expressed confidence that NIH Kolkata would further consolidate its position as a leading institution in homoeopathic education, research and patient care.

Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State for Education, highlighted NIH Kolkata’s five-decade contribution to education and healthcare. He said the new facilities would further strengthen the Institute as an academic and professional centre and provide enhanced opportunities for learning, training and innovation.

Jyotirmay Singh Mahato, said the expansion of NIH would contribute to improved clinical services and healthcare access for people in Kolkata and surrounding areas.

Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya, said the new facilities would enable the Institute to build on its strong institutional foundation and respond effectively to future academic and healthcare requirements.

The newly inaugurated Modular Operation Theatre adds a significant dimension to the Institute’s clinical infrastructure. Designed in accordance with contemporary healthcare requirements and equipped with modern systems, the facility will strengthen NIH Kolkata’s capacity to provide advanced clinical services while supporting training and professional development.

The Centre of Excellence will further enhance the Institute’s capabilities in clinical research, academic development and innovation. It will provide a platform for advancing research, fostering institutional collaborations and creating enhanced opportunities for students, faculty and healthcare professionals.

Dr. Pralay Sharma, Director, NIH Kolkata, said that the new facilities demonstrate NIH’s commitment to strengthening its infrastructure and preparing for the next phase of growth in homoeopathic education, research and patient care.

Ayush Minister Interacts with Students

During his visit to NIH on September 2, 2026, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, along with senior officials of the Ministry of Ayush, also held an extensive interaction with students of the institute to understand their views, concerns and suggestions for further development of homoeopathy.

During the interaction, students highlighted the academic environment and extensive clinical exposure available at NIH, including opportunities to learn from a large and diverse patient base. The Minister also acknowledged the contribution of postgraduate trainees and interns to patient-care activities. The Minister took note of suggestions relating to strengthening institutional infrastructure, including the proposed hospital building, animal house and pharmaceutical analysis laboratory. Issues concerning stipends, housestaffship and the NTET examination were also discussed.
